One row per active course. Sessions are run on Microsoft Teams; the tools below are what you'll use during and after class.

Install the Claude Desktop app

The desktop app is the friendlier home for chat, Projects, and Artifacts. Most CC02 / CC04 / cowork sessions run from here.

Download: claude.ai/download (Mac and Windows).

Mac

  1. Download the .dmg from the link above.
  2. Open the .dmg and drag Claude into Applications.
  3. Launch Claude from Applications. Allow notifications when prompted.
  4. Sign in with the email tied to your paid plan.

Windows

  1. Download the .exe installer from the link above.
  2. Run the installer; accept the default install location.
  3. Launch Claude from the Start menu.
  4. Sign in with the email tied to your paid plan.
You're ready when… the Claude app opens to a chat window and your account avatar (top right) shows your paid plan badge (Pro / Max / Team).

Install Claude Code (CLI)

Claude Code runs in your terminal. CC01 / CC03 sessions and most cowork builds use it.

Prerequisites:

  • Claude Desktop app installed and signed in (section above) — Claude Code authenticates through it.
  • Node.js 18 or newer. If node --version says nothing or under 18, install the LTS from nodejs.org.

Mac / Linux

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Run npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code.
  3. Run claude. Follow the sign-in prompt — it will open a browser tab for authentication via the Claude app.

Windows

  1. Open PowerShell (or use WSL if you're already set up there).
  2. Run npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code.
  3. Run claude. Follow the sign-in prompt.
You're ready when… typing claude in your terminal launches the assistant and accepts a prompt without asking you to sign in again.

Set up Google Gemini

No install. You just need a Google account and a browser. The free tier is fine for our training.

  1. Sign in to (or create) a Google account.
  2. Go to gemini.google.com.
  3. Send a test prompt — anything. Confirm it responds.
You're ready when… gemini.google.com loads with your account in the top-right corner and you've successfully sent one prompt.

First-run checklist

Before your session, confirm:

  • Claude Desktop opens and your account shows the paid-plan badge.
  • claude runs in your terminal and authenticates without prompting again — only if your course uses Claude Code.
  • gemini.google.com opens and you can send a test prompt — only if your course uses Gemini.

Troubleshooting

I signed in but see an "upgrade" prompt
Your account isn't on a paid plan. Upgrade at claude.ai/upgrade, then sign in again.
npm: command not found
Node.js isn't installed (or isn't on your PATH). Install Node.js LTS from nodejs.org and reopen your terminal.
Claude Code installed but won't sign in
Make sure the Claude Desktop app is installed and signed in first — Claude Code authenticates through it.
My work laptop blocks installs
Check with IT before the session, or join from a personal device. We can adapt during the session if you're stuck on a locked-down machine.
Gemini asks me to verify a phone number or region
Follow Google's prompts — the free tier works across Australia. If verification fails, try a different Google account or skip Gemini for the session.
